This is my little corner of the internet that I can call home. My name is Matt Oehrlein. I’m a 25 year old electrical engineer in Detroit, MI. My interests include, circuits, computing, cars, science, and technology in general. Through this blog, I hope to share my projects, ideas, tips & tricks, and some great stories. I’d love for you to leave some feedback while stopping by — especially if you see something you really like.
Hey,
I saw your LED banner costume (http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2011/10/say-hi-to-i3-detroit-tonight-through-matts-costume.html). Which make/model of display is it you’re using? A post on how you put it all together would be cool.
The model is a sunrise systems NXTP7X962M/J1708. It’s a really old model and it’s likely you won’t be able to find one. Essentially, it takes in J1708 (RS485) communication. I used a series of converters to go from 30-pin ipod connector -> RS232 -> RS485 to talk to the sign. I just asked Sunrise systems inc. for their communication protocol documentation.
